CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — Two sculptures by local artist Sondra Jonson have recently won honors in Iowa and Minnesota. This year 12 of Jonson’s large bronzes were accepted into juried outdoor exhibits in 9 midwestern cities including: Grand Island and Wayne, Neb.; Salina, Kan.; Sioux Falls and Watertown, S.D.; Mankato, Minn.; Eau Claire, Wis.; Mason City, Iowa; and Marysville, Mo. Two of her sculptures have achieved high honors. Her life-size sculpture “Story Hour” portraying of a little girl reading outdoors, surrounded by flowers, won the People’s Choice Award in Mason City, Iowa. “Story Hour” will now be purchased by the city for permanent installation outside their public library. Mason City, in eastern Iowa, is the home of the fictional “River City” in Meredith Wilson’s iconic musical “The Music Man.” Jonson’s sculpture “American Farmer” won Best of Show in Bronzes in Mankato, Minn. The City of Mankato is in the vicinity of Minneapolis and has displayed Jonson’s sculptures for many years. “American Farmer” was originally the centerpiece in Jonson’s larger sculpture “Breaking News” created for KRVN Rural Radio in Lexington. Cambridge farmer Mike Kubic was the model for this sculpture. Jonson continues to compete, exhibit and place her sculptures in a diversity of venues. She is currently working with veterans’ memorial parks in South Dakota and Kansas for placements of her WWII Army Air Corps Sculpture, “Fly-Boy.” Former MPCC student Josh Keener modeled for “Fly Boy” which was originally created for the American Veterans Memorial in North Platte. Additionally, Jonson has just completed bronze sculptures for churches in Lincoln, Neb., and Polson, Montana, and is currently developing a life-size sculpture of Catholic martyr Maximillian Kolbe for a church outside of Cincinnati, Ohio.
