Song of the Seraphim Altarpiece

Song of the Seraphim Altarpiece

This vibrant bronze Altarpiece draws us into the realms of Heaven, as seen by the prophet Isaiah and St. John the Evangelist. Isaiah witnessed six-winged seraphim around the throne of God singing the prayer we call the Sanctus: “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Hosts; Heaven and Earth are full of His glory.” (Isaiah 6:3) The seraph who purged the prophet's sins with a burning coal appears here in the top left of the Altarpiece.

St. John saw the Lamb of God enthroned with the Book of Life bearing seven seals (Rev. 6:1-17, 21:27) Here He holds the banner of victory for having conquered sin and death. The acronym (IHS)  below the book proclaims the Lamb as JESUS. Surrounding the Lamb is a fiery halo, reflecting the the seraphim as creatures of fire (“Who makes …His ministers a flame of fire” Ps. 104:4). Rippling ribbons dance and entwine among the seraphim echoing their endless praise and unbroken song.

We are drawn from the burdens and limitations of our mortal lives to contemplate the glory, beauty and eternal joy of Heaven.
